How to Prepare a Home for Sale

Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be market-ready.

The best preparation plan focuses on what buyers will notice, what may raise concerns and what can improve presentation without unnecessary renovation.

Before and after home staging transformation of a living room

Start With the Basics

  • Declutter and simplify rooms
  • Deep clean kitchens, bathrooms, floors and windows
  • Fix obvious small defects
  • Touch up paint where it improves presentation
  • Improve lighting and replace burnt-out bulbs
  • Remove excess personal items

Then Decide What Is Worth Spending On

Not every improvement adds enough value to justify the cost. Prioritize visible maintenance issues, dated finishes that distract buyers and rooms that photograph poorly.

Staging Comes After Preparation

Staging should clarify how the space works, improve photographs and help buyers understand scale and function. It cannot compensate for unresolved maintenance issues or clutter.
